How to use your PMI for orthopaedic treatment

If you’re using private medical insurance for your treatment, here is how the process typically works:

  1. Check your policy coverage
    • Review your PMI policy to ensure it covers the type of care you need, such as consultations, diagnostics, or surgery.
    • Contact your insurer if you’re unsure about specific coverage details.
  2. Referral from a GP
    • Most insurers require a referral from a GP before approving specialist care.
    • This referral can come from:some text
      • Your NHS GP
      • A private GP
      • A virtual GP provided by your insurer (many insurers offer this as part of their policy benefits).
    • If you need assistance finding a private GP, we can recommend trusted partners.
  3. Obtain pre-authorisation
    • Once you have a referral, contact your insurance provider to get pre-authorisation.
    • Your insurer will provide a pre-authorisation code and confirm coverage for your consultation or treatment.
  4. Book your appointment
    • Share your pre-authorisation code, policy details and membership number with our bookings team when arranging your consultation.
    • We’ll handle direct billing with your insurer, so you won’t need to worry about payments upfront for covered services.
  5. Attend your consultation
    • During your appointment, our consultant will assess your condition and provide a recommended treatment plan.
  6. Treatment authorisation
    • If additional procedures or treatments are required, we’ll provide the details needed for your insurer to authorise the next steps.
  7. Treatment & follow-ups
    • Once approved, your treatment will proceed as planned. Most follow-up appointments are also covered, subject to your policy terms.

What if my policy includes excess or limited coverage?

  • If your policy includes an excess, you will need to cover this amount directly.
  • For treatments not covered by your policy, our team will provide a clear cost breakdown and discuss your options.

Additional notes for patients with PMI

  • Cash Plans: If you have a cash plan rather than a traditional PMI policy, please inform our bookings team. These plans may partially reimburse your treatment costs, but direct billing is usually not available.
  • Policy Renewal & Changes: If you have questions about policy limits, exclusions, or renewals, contact your insurer directly to understand how they affect your care.
